언어는 쓰는 것이지 공부하는 것이 아니다.

추신: 그렇다고 공부하지 말라는 것은 아니다.

요즘 사람들을 만나다 보면 계속 나오는 이야기가 있다.  바로 언어. 

 

"너는 영어 잘해서 좋겠다."

"너는 뭔가 언어에 재능이 있는 것 같아."

"뭐 새로운 언어를 배운다고, 생각만 해도 싫다."

"언어를 배워놓으면 좋긴한데, 어려우니까."

 

나는 언어를 배우는 것이 재밌다. 새로운 외국인 친구가 생기면 그들과 그들의 언어로 대화하고 싶다. 새로운 책에 관심이 생기면, 그 책을 원서로 읽어보고 싶다. 그런데 왜 사람들은 언어를 이렇게 힘들어하는 걸까?

 

어렸을 때부터 여러나라에서 여러 언어를 가까이 접하고 살아온 나로서 언어에 관심을 갖는 것은 당연한 일이었다. 그렇다고 언어가 배우기 쉬웠던 것은 아니다. 중국어를 배울 때 한자가 어려워 초등학교 안에서 울음을 터트렸던 적도, 영어 문제지가 풀기 싫어 답안을 보고 베낀 적도 있었다. 하지만 아무리 언어 공부가 힘들어도, 공부를 그만둬야겠다라거나, 하기 싫다는 생각은 하지 않았다. 여러 나라에서 그들의 언어를 배워서 사용해 친구를 사귀고, 문화를 배우고, 새로운 시각을 가져가는 것. 

그것이 행복했다.

 

당신은 언어를 배울때 무엇이 제일 중요하다고 생각하는가? 

선생님, 학원, 동료들, 책, 환경, 아니면 재능? 

나는 모티브다. 

동기. Motive. Le motif. 勭機.

당신은 왜 언어를 배우는가? 

 

처음 이글을 쓸뗴만해도 나는 나의 동기가 생존본능, 어쩔 수 없이 그 나라에 살기 때문에 배워야 했다고 생각했다. 그것이 제일 강력한 모티브이고, 사람들이 유학에 열광하는 이유라고 생각했다. 맞는 말이긴 하지만 생각해보니 생존본능 보다 더 강력한 모티브가 있었다.

바로 행복, 성취감/ fulfillment 이였다.

 

그 나라에서 살았기 때문에 언어를 공부하면 바로 사용해볼 수 있었다. 그리고 언어를 배우는 쾌감을 느낄 수 있었다. 문화도 말도 모든게 다른 사람과 처음으로 통한다는 느낌, 그 새로운 문화를 마음으로 이해하는 느낌은 다른 것으로 대체되지 않는 쾌감을 나에게 주었다. 꼭 그 나라에서 살지 않아도 우리는 우리가 배우는 언어를 다양하게 사용할 수 있다. 책을 읽거나, 친구를 사귀거나, 다른 나라 문화에 관심을 갔는다거나. 

언어를 배우면서 하기 싫거나 힘들다면, 자기 자신한테 물어보라. 

당신은 언어를 배워서 어디에 쓰는가? 만약 이 질문에 대한 대답이 힘들다면, 당연히 그 언어를 배울 때 힘들 수밖에.

우리가 언어를 배우는 이유는 다양하다, 여행을 가고 싶어서, 외국 친구를 사귀고 싶어서, 스펙을 쌋기 위해서. 이런 것들이 동기가 될 순 있지만 우리는 감정의 동물이기 때문에 언어 사용의 쾌감을 느껴야, 언어를 공부할 지속력이 생긴다.

 

그렇기 떄문에 나는 언어 공부가 재밌다. 행복하기 때문에.

 

배우고 쓰는 언어;

한국어, 영어, 중국어, 프랑스어

 

배우고 쓰고 싶은 언어;

일본어, 스페인어.

Language is to use not to learn.

 

P.s: that doesn’t mean that you should stop learning.

 

These days when I meet people there is a topic that keeps on coming up.

Language.

 

“You speak English so well. I envy you.”

“I think you have some kind of talent in language.”

“What you are going to learn a new language. Just thinking about that makes me puke.”

“It’s good to learn a language, but it’s hard so….”

 

The thing is I love learning new languages. When I get to know someone, I would like to talk to them in their language. If I gain interest in a book, I want to read the book in it’s original language. Why would people have such a hard time learning new languages?

 

From a young age I grow up in several countries, for me it was a natural thing to gain interest in languages. That doesn’t mean I didn’t have hard time learning new language. Learning new language is hard. There was a time when I cried in-front of whole class  because Chinese word was so hard, and when I cheated on an English test. But even after all that, I still wanted to learn the language. To use different language in different countries, and using it to make new friends, learn new cultures, and to have new point of view in life.

 

That was pure happiness.

 

What do you think is the most important thing in learning languages?

Teacher? after-school studies? Class mates? Books? Environment? Or talent?

 

Well I think is motive.

Why do you learn languages?

 

When I first started to write this posts I thought my strongest motive was survival instinct. The fact that I lived in a new country with different languages, I didn’t have much choices. I had to learn those languages in order to live. I thought this was why Korean people was so in to studying abroad, because survival instinct was the strongest motive. However when I thought about it there was a motive that was stronger.

 

That was fulfillment. To enjoy and gain happiness through learning languages.

 

Because I live in that country, when I learn the language I could use it right away. And I was able to learn the pleasure of learning new languages. The feeling of having some kind of connection between me and another person who has completely different languages and culture. To understand one’s culture not by words, but by the heart. That excitement was irreplaceable. We can get this feeling without actually going to that country. We can read a book, make foreigner friends, or take interest in other country’s culture.

 

When you are learning a new language, and you feel like puking. Ask yourself.

 

Where are you using that language? If you can’t answer this question, then of course learning language is hard.

 

There is a lot of reason we learn languages. To go on a trip, because we want to make foreigner friends, to improve as a person, to gain respect, and so on. This can be your motive, but we humans are animals of emotion. We actually have to feel pleasure through learning in order to keep going. And to feel pleasure you need to use the language you are learning.

 

So that’s why I love learning new languages. Cause It’s fun.
